Uniontown man charged with kidnap, indecent assault
A Uniontown man is facing 27 charges after he allegedly held a couple hostage in their own home last weekend.
The two first encountered Tobias Alexander Mitchell, 34, after he knocked on the door of their South Mount Vernon Avenue house between 4 and 5 p.m. Saturday, forced his way inside and demanded $120, police said.
He later assaulted the woman, according to police. The ĢƵ does not identify those who allege they are victims of sexual assault.
The couple reported the incident to Uniontown City Police on Wednesday afternoon.
The man told Mitchell he would need to withdraw money from the ATM. The woman said she could see a gun in his waistband, according to court documents.
“The defendant told her he would kill her if (the man) tried anything,” Uniontown police Sgt. Wayne Brown wrote in the affidavit of probable cause.
He returned with the money and Mitchell left, only to return 10 minutes later and demand $50 more, police said.
The alleged victim returned to the ATM while Mitchell allegedly held his girlfriend once again in the house.
After giving Mitchell the $50, he allegedly held them in the house until 5 a.m. the next morning.
Mitchell allegedly returned a third time later in the morning and choked the man until he was unconscious. When the alleged victim awoke, Mitchell demanded another $250 and threatened to beat them if he would not comply.
When he left to withdraw money, Mitchell allegedly took the woman to the his house, which is also on South Mount Vernon Avenue. He allegedly held the woman in the basement, “made her sit in front of them and told her he could kill her before police got there,” the affidavit said.
He allegedly groped her chest and “shoved her face into his pelvis,” police said.
The man told police Mitchell was texting him instructions to drive to different locations around the city and demanded he bring him another $60.
Mitchell allegedly let them leave his house at about 7 p.m.
They went to their house Monday to pick up some belongings. Then, they allegedly found Mitchell in the bedroom.
He allegedly demanded the man give him “everything he had.” He received $60, and left out the back door, police said.
Mitchell is charged with four counts each of burglary, theft and receiving stolen property, two counts each of simple assault, terroristic threats, kidnap, false imprisonment and unlawful restraint and one count of indecent assault by forcible compulsion.
Mitchell was arraigned Wednesday night by on-call Magisterial District Judge Mike Defino Jr. He set bail at $75,000.
Mitchell is lodged in Fayette County Prison.
He was also charged for an alleged robbery of a man on Monroe Street in Uniontown. He allegedly stole an bank card and withdrew about $600 from an ATM at Uniontown Hospital.
