Ten fire departments, including three from Fayette County, were called to extinguish a fire at a gas station in Confluence, Somerset County.

The fire started just after 9 a.m. at Hartman Service Center at 479 Latrobe Ave., according to Somerset County Control.

Confluence Fire Chief Tom Close Jr. said the time of day made it difficult to find manpower with many volunteer firefighters at work. He said there were flammable materials such as oil that made extinguishing the fire difficult and potentially hazardous. He said the nearest public gas station is about 10 miles away on Route 40.

Close said it took a little more than one hour to contain the fire.

One firefighter, who also works at the gas station, was transported to Somerset Hospital with high blood pressure, he said.

A fire truck from Friendsville, Maryland, was in an accident on the way to the scene, he said. The accident was not believed to be serious.

Fire departments from Confluence, Addison, New Centerville, Markleysburg, Meyersdale, Somerset, Rockwood, Farmington, Ohiopyle and Friendsville, Maryland, responded to the scene. The Somerset County Hazmat Team, Fayette and Marclay EMS and Somerset ambulance also assisted at the scene.
