A 2-year-old was put into a medically induced coma with a poor prognosis after an alleged beating caused him to lose consciousness.

Police charged Benjamin Glenn Lesczynski, 26, of Brownsville with attempted homicide after they were called to the Main Street residence in West Brownsville for an unresponsive child Saturday.

Lesczynski, who is the live-in boyfriend of the childĢƵ mother, claimed he was outside getting cigarettes and returned to find the boy unconscious on the dining room floor. He has two other children, ages 8 and 6, who lived in the house, police said.

The boyĢƵ mother, Brittany Nicole Sumey, told police Lesczynski said that “they need to get their stories straight,” and to say she was in the living room, according to the affidavit of probable cause filed in his case.

She said she went downstairs to use the bathroom and her boyfriend was “acting odd.” Sumey heard LeczynskiĢƵ 8-year-old child say, “Dad, he is getting up.”

About 10 minutes later, Leczynski went upstairs and told her that her son was unresponsive.

The boy was transported to UPMC ChildrenĢƵ Hospital in Pittsburgh with life-threatening brain injuries. An emergency surgery that involved removing part of the childĢƵ skull was initiated but stopped because of uncontrolled bleeding, according to court documents.

Police said the toddler also had bruising to his head, torso, shoulders, jaw and face.

Lesczynski is charged with criminal attempt to commit homicide, simple assault, endangering the welfare of children, recklessly endangering another person and two counts of aggravated assault.

He was arraigned Tuesday morning before Magisterial District Judge Robert Redlinger and lodged in Washington County Prison in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 6 before Redlinger.
