Uniontown man held without bail after spitting at magistrate
A Uniontown man who was initially arrested for public drunkenness is being held without bail after he allegedly spit at a magistrate, threatened city police officers and damaged police property.
Uniontown City Police officers said they found William Dallas Carter, 24, of South Mount Vernon Avenue stumbling through a construction zone on Morgantown Street near Robinson Street at about 8 p.m. Monday.
Police said his breath smelled like alcohol and he kicked over a construction cone. As officers handcuffed him, he began to “tense up,” requiring officers to use “substantial force” to apply the handcuffs, court documents indicate.
Carter allegedly kicked the cage window open in a police car, causing about $1,000 in damage. Carter allegedly threatened Patrolman Nicholas Zocco, saying, “I should just shoot you and your whole squad,” according to the affidavit of probable cause filed in his case.
Zocco wrote in court documents that “he got into my face in an aggressive/threatening manner,” requiring officers to restrain him on the ground before locking him in a holding cell.
On-call Magisterial District Judge Jennifer Jeffries arrived at the station to arraign Carter just before midnight. He allegedly began swearing at Jeffries and spit at the magistrate and officers. Police put a spit mask on Carter and restrained him.
They said he would not calm down and continued swearing at officers and resisting.
Jeffries denied bail, reporting in court documents Carter “posed a physical threat” to her.
He is charged with misdemeanor counts of institutional vandalism, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
His preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Aug. 15 before Jeffries.
