A stolen state police cruiser lies on its side on Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road in Wharton Township.

A local man who allegedly stole a state police cruiser in South Union Township Thursday afternoon and caused a wreck is behind bars on a $250,000 bail.

State police were called to assist Chestnut Ridge crisis workers in the Bierwood Acres Housing Complex after Michael J. Fabian, 36, of Snyder Terrace walked away from them in his underwear toward Uniontown Hospital at about 12:50 p.m.

Police pursued him on foot as a group of bystanders shouted to one of the troopers Fabian was getting in his police cruiser. When the trooper was within five feet of his vehicle, Fabian drove away, court paperwork said.

The trooperÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ name was redacted from court documents.

A state police cruiser in pursuit of Fabian crashed, disabling the vehicle. No other details were released about the wreck.

Fabian crashed on State Route 40 near Hopwood Fairchance Road and continued fleeing, police said.

Another trooper spotted the stolen cruiser and joined the pursuit, following Fabian as he turned onto Chalk Hill Ohiopyle Road in Wharton Township. The trooper used a Pursuit Intervention Technique maneuver on the stolen car, causing it to flip onto the passenger side, court documents said.

Fabian resisted arrest, police said. A bystander helped troopers handcuff his second hand.

Police transported Fabian to Uniontown Hospital, where he told them he smoked marijuana that day, court paperwork said.

He is charged with theft, resisting arrest, accident involving attended property, and two counts each of DUI and fleeing officers.

Fabian was arraigned at 11 p.m. Thursday by on-call Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. Shimshock, who set bail at $250,000.

The suspect remains in Fayette County Prison in lieu of bond. He faces a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 6 before Shimshock.
