Heavy rain causes some flooding, power outages in area
Heavy rains are causing some basement flooding and power outages in Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties, with more showers forecasted for today.
More than three inches of rain hit the Uniontown area Thursday night prompting more than 100 telephone calls from people mostly in Fairchance, said Vince Sherwood, 911 coordinator with Fayette County Emergency Medical Services.
“Numerous flooded basements,” Sherwood said.
Greene County Emergency Medical Services said they received one call about a flooded basement in Rogersville.
Washington County Emergency Medical Services said it had been quiet and no weather-related emergencies.
“Knock wood,” said an EMS supervisor who declined to give his name.
Nearly 1,100 West Penn Power customers were without electricity in Fayette County, the utility said late Friday morning. Greene County had 551 outages, while Washington County had 136, and Westmoreland 62.
The rain is expected to let up Saturday with a sunny day forecasted. The rain, however, is forecasted to return Sunday night, the National Weather Service said.
