SCI Fayette inmate waives homicide charge
An inmate at the State Correctional Institute at Fayette waived criminal homicide and related charges Wednesday for a single fatal punch that investigators allege caused the death of a fellow inmate last year.
Daysean “All Day” Wykee Brock, 33, of Huntingdon was not represented by an attorney for his preliminary hearing, although he said he applied for a public defender.
He decided to waive the charges after a brief exchange with Magisterial District Judge Michael Metros, after verifying that waiving his charges was not an admission of guilt.
He is serving a term of 24 years and 1 month to 48 years and 2 months in prison for a third-degree murder conviction. He was committed Jan. 18, 2013.
A witness told investigators the victim, John Steckley, 51, was fighting with another inmate over money June 18 when that inmate slapped Steckley. Brock, also known as “CB 17 Top Bunk” and “Day Day” then allegedly “blindside punched” Steckley, knocking him to the ground. Steckley was reportedly left on the ground for about an hour before inmates helped him into his cell. Police said Steckley was vomiting, coughing up blood, losing consciousness and slurring his words. Steckley did not get up the next day, when correctional officers found him unconscious, according to court documents.
A head injury was later discovered, and he was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital where he died June 26.
An Allegheny County medical examiner determined he died of blunt force trauma to the head by homicide.
Police said Brock denied the allegations.
He is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
Steckley began serving a 10 to 22 year sentence for an aggravated assault conviction in Philadelphia in September 2006. He was transferred to the Luzerne Township prison in 2008.
