The New Haven Hose fire captain was buying a sandwich at VonaĢƵ Dairy Bar when he noticed a column of smoke billowing from the apartment building across the street.

New Haven fire Chief Bob Topper Sr. said firefighters were able to extinguish the third-floor fire quickly before it spread to other apartments. Crews were called to 267 East Crawford Ave. at 1:19 p.m., he said.

“We got a real quick knockdown on it,” Topper said.

Other residents will be able to return to their apartments, he said.

Topper said it appeared the fire was electrical in nature, starting under a chair with an extension cord across it. No one was in the apartment when the fire started, he said.

East Crawford Avenue from Cottage Avenue to Snyder Street was closed for about one hour.

Connellsville Township, South Connellsville and Morrell fire departments assisted at the scene. Scottdale fire department was on standby.
