‘Situation contained’ after shots fired in Greene
A man who reportedly fired shots from the roof of a Dry Tavern residence prompted massive response from law enforcement, evacuations and school lockdowns.
No injuries were reported, according to State police Trooper Robert Broadwater. He said someone fired shots at a 977 North Route 88 residence at about 12:10 p.m. The man was detained by Cumberland Township police, who were the first to arrive on scene. No charges were filed Tuesday evening. Officials thought “at least one person” remained inside until a Special Emergency Response Team entered the residence and found it was vacant.
Broadwater said it has not yet been determined what the man was shooting at or why.
A representative with the Jefferson-Morgan School District said their elementary and middle/high schools were placed on lockdown at 1 p.m., and it was lifted around 3 p.m. Neighbors and area businesses were evacuated.
Neighbor Carrie Yeager said she was inside when she heard four gunshots and a woman yell for someone to call 911. She said she looked out her window to see a man with a gun on the roof and called 911.
“I got on the floor and I was crawling toward the basement when I heard multiple more shots,” she said.
Yeager said she hid in her basement for several hours while her 6-year-old daughter was on lockdown at school and her husband was at work.
“That image is just burned in my head of him on the roof with a gun. You see that kind of stuff on the national news but you never think itĢƵ going to happen to you,” she said.
Neighbor Scott Martin said he was sleeping after an overnight work shift when his dog woke him up. He went outside and heard about 20 shots fired before he was evacuated from his house, he said.
Carmichaels Area School District Superintendent John Menhart said their schools went on lockdown at 1:11 p.m. and remained that way until 2:10 p.m.
Menhart said although he was informed the incident happened in an area thatĢƵ a part of the Jefferson-Morgan School District, they went on lockdown as a precaution.
According to Adriano Policicchio, an employee at Italian Boys Pizza, they were preparing to serve lunch around 11:30 a.m. when he heard popping sounds from two houses over from their location.
“We heard about 30 rounds,” Policicchio said. “It was repeatedly rapid gunfire.”
Policicchio said when he looked outside, he saw someone standing on the roof of a house, shooting a gun into the houseĢƵ window.
Policicchio said the police directed him and the owner to remain in the pizza shop and to not leave the location.
“There has to be 25 cops right outside, the roads are blocked off, thereĢƵ police and TV helicopters in the air,” Policicchio said late Tuesday afternoon. He said he and the shopĢƵ owner were still instructed to stay in the building.
“Everything is locked down,” Policicchio said, adding that the area is normally very quiet.
