Van hits woman in wheelchair on a Uniontown street
A woman was seriously injured when a van hit her as she crossed South Street in a wheelchair in Uniontown at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
She was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, where she underwent emergency surgery, according to Uniontown City Police Lt. Tom Kolencik.
The woman is expected to survive, thanks in part to construction workers who rushed to her aid and placed a tourniquet on her, Kolencik said.
“That may have saved her life, so hats off to them,” he said.
Surveillance footage showed the woman pull into the street in front of the van, which Kolencik said gave the driver little time to stop.
He said she was crossing toward Marathon gas station.
The van was equipped to carry wheelchairs, he said.
The state police accident reconstruction unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
Uniontown Fire Department and Fayette EMS also assisted at the scene.
South Street was closed near VanessaĢƵ Hair Salon for several hours. That portion of the road is a one-way street.
