A Saltlick Township landmark which housed apartments was destroyed by fire Thursday, leaving four people homeless.
Twenty-seven fire crews from three counties battled the blaze at the former ReshĢƵ General Store on Indian Head Road in Champion, Fayette County, for hours, beginning at about 2:30 a.m. The fire rekindled at about 1 p.m., soon after firefighters left.
Among those left homeless in the blaze was a former firefighter and a member of the ladies auxiliary. Preliminary investigations appeared to show the cause of the fire was electrical, officials said. The tenants escaped without injury, and no firefighters were hurt in the long-burning blaze, said Saltlick Township Volunteer Fire Co. Assistant Chief Jerry Galas.
“I’m still in shock,” said owner Chris Resh as he watched smoke pour from his building hours after it ignited. “I just feel terrible.”
The fire started in an attic space above the apartments and became trapped between spaces in the metal roof, making the blaze difficult to extinguish, Galas said. The upper level and lower level each held two apartments. The building was insured.
The store, first opened in 1923, was listed as a tourist attraction on visitpa.com, highlighting its variety and discounts for locals and tourists in hardware, groceries and automotive parts. Galas said he remembers visiting the store as a child and throughout his adult years.
“It was a landmark, as far as the Resh family generations go,” Galas said. “It was the store everyone knew to go to.”
He said he was grateful for the assistance of neighboring fire departments.
“Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland counties worked well together, and being that itĢƵ our fire, we appreciate the help and support,” he said.
Rehabilitative units from Fayette EMS and Murrysville were on scene aiding firefighters, which Galas said was greatly necessary for crews fighting the persistent fire.
