Police: Brownsville man charged in racially motivated assault
A Brownsville man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly assaulted a man while using racial slurs against him.
Jay Jon Solarz, 46, of 321 Shelton Avenue is facing misdemeanor charges of ethnic intimidation, simple assault and disorderly conduct.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Solarz shouted racial slurs from his property at about 7 p.m. Thursday, and a juvenile black male responded and approached him on Stewart Street. Solarz told police he continued using racial slurs, prompting a neighbor to call 911. Durce Jackson, who police described as an elderly black man, then approached Solarz. Solarz allegedly used racial slurs against Jackson and assaulted him, causing a swollen lip and pain to his right shoulder joint. Solarz then fled to another neighbor’s house, police alleged.
He was arraigned Thursday night before Magisterial District Judge Nathan A. Henning, who set bail at $20,000 in the case. Solarz was released Friday after bail was posted on his behalf.
