Several firefighters were treated on scene for heat-related injuries at a Washington Township, Fayette County, home Tuesday.

A fire started in the upstairs bedroom at 1131 Connellsville Road at about 10:50 a.m. A woman who owns the house was not home at the time, said Washington Township Assistant Fire Chief Rob Bennett.

“A passerby saw smoke and called 911,” he said.

It appeared the fire was electrical in nature and not suspicious, though a state police fire marshal was called to investigate, he said.

The fire was contained to the bedroom. Water damage was extensive, he said.

Eight fire companies were called to alleviate the burden of battling the blaze on the hot day.

Several cats survived the fire in the basement.

“They don’t want to come out,” he said. “They’re all down there crying.”

Fayette City, North Belle Vernon, Belle Vernon, Perryopolis, Rostraver Central, Roscoe and California fire departments assisted Washington Township on the scene, along with Rostraver EMS. They remained on scene for about two hours. No injuries were reported.
