American Legion cancels Flag Day event

American Legion Post 51 announces it is regretfully canceling its event for Flag Day due to the recent fire at its building.

Kathy Rodgers, secretary, said the event was supposed to have taken place on Flag Day, June 14, at the post, located at 508 E. Main St., in South Union Township. The event would have included a program and flag-burning ceremony.

“I would like to thank everyone who would have been involved in the program,” said Rodgers. “We are looking forward to next year’s Flag Day.”

The American Legion’s building burned on June 1 in a fire that caused nearly $1 million in damages.

State police have issued an arrest warrant for James Vernon Shaffer Jr., 38, of East Church Street in Fairchance, who was a bartender at the post. He also reportedly stole $2,000 from the South Union Township post.
