A Dawson man accused of stabbing his girlfriend in the chest is facing a new charge for allegedly putting their young daughter in danger.

Dustin Thomas Newell, 26, of Dawson allegedly committed the stabbing while 24-year-old Noell Brown was holding their 2-year-old daughter, Ayla Newell.

A misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of children was added at his scheduled preliminary hearing at Fayette County Central Court, Tuesday morning, before Fayette County Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. Shimshock. The hearing was rescheduled for later this month so his attorney, Jack Connor, could prepare a defense for the new charge, which Connor said he was not anticipating.

Newell muttered it was “ridiculous” as he left the courtroom. He was freed from jail after posting $75,000 bail following his arraignment April 6, the morning after he reportedly stabbed Brown on Upper Hulltown Road outside their Lower Tyrone Township home.

He reportedly told police that on the night of the stabbing, he went across the street to cash a lottery ticket with one of their two daughters, leaving his phone at home. When they returned, Brown questioned him about texts on his phone and an apparent relationship with another woman. She packed her things and left, with Newell following. He claimed he remembered holding a knife, and maybe “hitting” Newell with it, but said his memory was unclear after he left the house and he was not sure if he stabbed her, court documents said.

Two neighbors — NewellĢƵ brother and his brotherĢƵ girlfriend — witnessed the stabbing from their nearby home and rushed to BrownĢƵ aid, police said.

Newell has never faced criminal charges before, according to state police.

He is charged with attempted homicide, unlawful restraint, simple assault, endangering the welfare of children, reckless endangerment and two counts of aggravated assault.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 27.
