Brownsville Area Ministerial Association will kick off its first Social Justice Summer Series on June 26, a monthly presentation and prayer service that includes special music as well as a time of fellowship.

“The intention is to build on the relationships that have been forming ecumenically among the congregations and take things a step farther beyond worship into social justice issues so we can work together in service,” said the Rev. Katy Yates Brungraber, pastor of Fort Burd United Presbyterian Church in Brownsville, who is providing leadership for the series.

The series will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month from June through September. Each session will take place at a different location and feature different speakers and musicians. Host sites lead prayer and offer refreshments.

The first on June 26 will be held at the Iron Bridge Amphitheatre in Snowden Square in Brownsville with the Sons of Italy at 16 Race St. as the backup location in case of inclement weather.

Will James of Brownsville’s Team Humanity will speak on “Local Realities” while Cross Vision Christian rock band will provide music. Those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair.

Brungraber explained James is working with youths in the area, and trying to bring people together to look at realities that include unemployment, underemployment and drugs.

The series continues July 24 at Calvary United Presbyterian Church, 307 Spring St., Brownsville with Kathy Haluska, Fort Burd Presbyterian Church ruling elder, and the Rev. Terry Sanders of Genesis House in Uniontown, speaking on “Mass Incarceration and Re-entry.” The worship team from Genesis House will provide special music.

The Aug. 28 event is at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 307 High St. in Brownsville, when the Rev. Dawn Hargraves of First United Methodist Church will speak on “Racism and White Privilege.” Outpost Band from Fort Burd United Presbyterian Church will provide music.

The final event is at Allison Nazarene Church, 416 Vernon St., Allison when Dr. Keith Hartbauer, superintendent of the Brownsville Area School District will speak on “Youth Violence.” He will be joined by security personnel and a social worker. Southminster Ringers Handbell Team from Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania, will provide music.

A goodwill offering will be collected each month in support of BAMA’s ecumenical mission.
