A Buick LaCrosse wound up in the room of a South Union Township assisted living facility resident Saturday afternoon, pinning the resident in against a wall before he was removed by emergency responders.

The LaCrosse crashed through after its driver apparently mistook the gas pedal for the brake, according to South Union Fire Department Chief Rick McCormick, who reported no serious injuries to either the unnamed male resident of Beechwood Court or the unnamed female driver, who McCormick said was a visitor, not a resident.

The resident was watching television when the LaCrosse slammed into his abode and sustained only minor injuries before being hospitalized for evaluation, McCormick said.

“He didn’t have much to say when we went in,” McCormick said, adding that the resident will be relocated within the same facility until a contractor can repair the damage caused by the car, which destroyed a 6-foot-by-4-foot wall and took out the residentĢƵ heating and air conditioning unit, furniture and bed, per McCormick.

McCormick said the driver eventually left the scene with a family member.

Additionally, McCormick estimated around $15,000 to $20,000 in damages stemming from the crash.

The call following the crash came in at 3:17 p.m., McCormick said, adding that his fire department and Fayette EMS responded to the call.

McCormick reported water damage from leaking heating pipes to two rooms adjacent to the room where the crash took place but no additional structural damage.
