A man was flown to a hospital by medical helicopter after a furnace exploded in a North Union Township house Monday afternoon, according to a Fayette County 911 supervisor.

The man was reportedly working on the furnace in the basement of 219 Bailey Avenue when it reportedly exploded in his face at about 2 p.m. Fayette EMS and fire departments rushed to the scene. The man was taken to Uniontown Hospital by ambulance, where he was flown to a trauma center for further treatment, officials said.

A fire ignited in the basement, which was quickly contained and extinguished by responding fire departments including West Leisenring and Hopwood. The extent of the damage and the man’s condition was not immediately known.
