Monongahela man charged in infant assault
MONONGAHELA – A Monongahela man was arrested Friday on charges he shook a baby at chest level before dropping the child on the floor while babysitting last year.
Monongahela police charged James Michael Manges II, 36, of 467 Stockdale Ave., with two felony counts of aggravated assault in the case before he was sent to Washington County Jail on $250,000 bail, court records show.
The investigation began when police were summoned about 3 p.m. Dec. 13 to Manges’ home because a 4-month-old had shallow breathing, and was having a seizure and not responding, the affidavit states.
The baby was taken to UPMC ChildrenÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ Hospital of Pittsburgh, where a physician determined the child had suffered severe head injuries that were consistent with abuse, police said in charging documents.
Police said the infant had an appointment with a physician who found no health problems before the baby was dropped off at Manges’ house Dec. 13. Manges also was the only person with the infant for about a hour before the injuries were discovered, according to police.
The baby reportedly was dropped while Manges was getting a glass of water, police said.
He allegedly confessed March 1 to dropping the baby after undergoing a polygraph test administered by state police.
District Judge Mark Wilson also arraigned Manges Friday on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangerment and simple assault.
Manges is scheduled to appear again before Wilson for a preliminary hearing at 10:45 a.m. April 17.
