A Monessen man was sentenced to state prison on charges stemming from allegations he’d sexually abused a child at a home in West Pike Run Township five years ago.

Jose S. Cortes, 27, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, plus one each of child endangerment and corruption of minors in a deal with Washington County prosecutors. Common Pleas Judge Valarie Costanzo imposed a sentence of 4 to 12 years in prison, plus another 3 years of probation.

State police filed the charges in December 2016, alleging that Cortes had sexually assaulted a 5-year-old child on multiple occasions earlier that year.

Cortes was set to face a jury trial before Costanzo this week.

In exchange for the guilty plea, records show prosecutors dropped counts of statutory sexual assault, indecent assault and indecent exposure.
