Three people were injured, two critically, in a head-on vehicle crash Monday morning in Carroll Township.

One driver, Julie Nicholas, 51, of New Eagle, and her passenger, William Criswell, 59, of Monongahela, were taken by ambulance in critical condition to Mon Valley Hospital following the 7 a.m. accident on Route 88, Carroll police said.

The other driver, Michael Bloom, 38, of Fayette City, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Mon Valley Hospital, police said.

Bloom was traveling north near the top of Craven Hill when his vehicle appeared to have crossed the center line and collided with Nicholas’ car, which was traveling south, police said.

Nicholas and her passenger had to extricated from their car at the crash scene near Elizabeth Road, police said.

Rescue workers called for two medical helicopters, but the request was denied due to strong winds. The state police accident reconstruction team also responded to the crash.

Route 88 was closed to traffic for about four hours, police said.

Assisting at the scene were Charleroi police and the Carroll and New Eagle fire departments.
