Man charged in daylight shooting in Uniontown
A Uniontown man was arrested within minutes Tuesday morning after allegedly shooting another man during an argument on a Uniontown street.
Demetreus “Meech” Thomas, 33, of 24 Millview Street was reportedly found hiding in a garage behind his home, where he ran after allegedly shooting James Walters in the arm and leg at about 11:30 a.m.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed in his case, Thomas admitted to shooting Walters, saying he did it because Walters “put his hands on his girlfriend,” Uniontown City Police Officer Jamie Holland wrote.
Walters was taken to Uniontown Hospital for treatment. His injuries did not appear to be life threatening, according to Capt. David Rutter.
At least two witnesses told police they saw the shooting and identified the suspect, police said.
Two .380-caliber shell casings were found between the sidewalk and the road near 33 Millview Street, court documents indicated.
Thomas told police he ran when the gun jammed. He showed police where he put the gun, on the ground near the back porch of his home. The gun was disabled, court documents said.
Witnesses told police they were on their porch with their small child when Thomas allegedly shot Walters. Walters ran onto their porch for help, and Thomas allegedly continued shooting in their direction, causing them to fear for themselves and the child.
Millview Street was closed to traffic Tuesday afternoon as city police and state police processed the crime scene.
Police obtained a search warrant for the house and garage where the suspect was found.
Police do not believe there was any connection between TuesdayĢƵ shooting and a shooting early Friday on East South Street.
Thomas was awaiting his arraignment at press time.
He was convicted of robbery in 2004, prohibiting him from possessing a gun.
He is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm prohibited, firearms not to be carried without a license and four counts of recklessly endangering another person.
