Monongahela council reflects on successful 250th anniversary celebration
MONONGAHELA – City officials, volunteers and residents continue to bask in the afterglow of the city’s 250th anniversary celebration.
Last weekend, Monongahela held a three-day celebration that included festivities such as a Whiskey Rebellion re-enactment, parade, fireworks, music and displays. In addition, Monongahela set a new Guinness World Record record on Sunday for the world’s largest wedding cookie table
“It was a great weekend and a wonderful tribute for our city,” said Monongahela Mayor Bob Kepics, during a workshop meeting of the council Monday. “A lot of people came together to make this a highly successful celebration. It was a weekend we will never forget.”
Kepics hopes Monongahela can build on the success of its anniversary celebration by scheduling more historical re-enactments in the future.
“One of the top attractions last weekend was the Indian encampment at Mounds Park,” he said. “I would like to see us continue this tradition each summer with a similar event. We owe a lot to the Native Americans who settled in our area. Our city was named after them, and we feature these Native Americans on many different signs throughout Monongahela.”
During the meeting, the council displayed artwork of Monongahela by students from Bentworth School District. The paintings will be displayed at the Monongahela Aquatorium during the summer months.
“We want to thank all the young people who were involved in the celebration,” said Terry Necciai, executive director of the Monongahela Main Street Program. “It was great to see the youth so excited about our anniversary.”
In other business, Councilman William “Rusty” Polinoli reminded the council about the upcoming deadline for Local Share Account grant applications. Among its top priorities, Monongahela is seeking funding to repair a small bridge adjoining Chess Street near the Eat’n Park restaurant.
All requests for 2020 LSA funding must be submitted to the Redevelopment Authority of Washington County by 5 p.m. Sept. 25.
