Carol Myers of Uniontown celebrated her 100th birthday on Feb. 12.

A 1936 graduate of Stowe Township High School, Myers is the last surviving member of seven siblings. She has two sons: Kenneth Balzer, 75, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Raymond Balzer, 70, of Phoenix, Arizona.

Since 1970, Carol has lived in Uniontown. A waitress most of her adult life, she worked until age 70.

Since then, she volunteered in the medical records department at Uniontown Hospital for 13 years as well as in the cafeteria at St. John School for two years and at the American Cancer Society in Uniontown.

A member of the Circle Club in Uniontown, Myers also volunteers at Uniontown Adult Recreation Center where a party was hosted. She was presented with a book signed by everyone at the center. She also received a framed copy of the front page of the Feb. 12, 1919 edition of the Daily News Standard newspaper as well as a copy of the Feb. 12, 2019 edition of the ĢƵ.

A regular at the center for the past 18 years, Myers won gold medals in the mile walk at age 93 through 95 at the Senior Games. She also represented the center at a spelling contest in York, Pennsylvania one year, finishing third.

She still loves to dance to rock ‘n roll, and raising her puppies, who she admits “run me ragged.”

Myers works on puzzles to keep her mind strong.

Her secret to a long life?

“I worked hard,” said Myers, “and did not look for any shortcuts.”
