A woman escaped her home Monday morning when a fast-moving fire destroyed her Vanderbilt home on Plum Alley.

“She just grabbed some of her stuff and got out of there,” said D. L. & V. Volunteer Fire Dept. Chief Kevin Logan.

The woman called 911 at about 8:30 a.m. to report a fire that appeared to start in the basement. Her adult daughter was not home. The two women were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. No injuries were reported.

Logan said the heavy wind gusts exacerbated the blaze.

“It blew the fire clean through that house,” he said. “The wind was no help this morning, let me tell you.”

Logan pulled his crews from the house when the gusts increased, fearing they could be trapped or injured. They extinguished the fire once the winds died down.

“ItĢƵ still standing,” he said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Crews remained on the scene until 11:30 a.m., Logan said, working to prevent the fire from rekindling.

D. L. & V. fire department was assisted on the scene by departments including Flatwoods, Dawson, Connellsville Township, South Connellsville, Scottdale, Monarch, Morrell, and Perryopolis.
