Local West Penn Power customers still without power following strong winds
Approximately 7,200 West Penn Power customers remained without power as of Wednesday morning following sweeping windstorms Sunday and Monday, with 151,000 customers restored so far.
Noting those updates Wednesday morning, FirstEnergy Corp. spokesperson Todd Meyers added that more than 1,600 people are working in some capacity to get the lights back on for customers, including 1,300 in the field comprised of linemen, tree trimmers, hazard responders and damage assessors.
“People just have to bear with us,” Meyers said.
Meyers said the high winds left behind many places to work for crews that include nearly 700 line workers, West Penn Power crews, external contractors from Missouri, Tennessee, South Carolina, Connecticut and New York, and regulated distribution companies Ohio Edison, Penelec and Met-Ed. West Penn Power is also a regulated distribution company for FirstEnergy.
Of the roughly 7,234 without power as of around 11 a.m. Thursday morning, 495 outages were in Fayette County, with 468 in Greene County, 1,924 in Washington County and 2,500 in Westmoreland County.
“We do understand their frustration,” Meyers said. “We’ll get through it.”
Meyers cautioned travelers to be cautious passing through work zones.
Meyers also noted West Penn Power customers in affected areas are eligible for two gallons of bottled water or their equivalent, and two bags of ice at local Giant Eagle locations that include the following.
