Divers recover body in Henry Clay Township pond
Authorities said they found a body believed to be that of a missing 30-year-old man in a Henry Clay Township pond Monday afternoon.
Police were searching for the man after his pickup truck was found submerged in the pond on Sickle Ridge Road earlier in the day, and he did not report to work. They have not released his name.
The man was reported to be missing and endangered Monday morning, according to state police Trooper Robert Broadwater. He said the man was last heard from Sunday afternoon.
The truck was under a layer of ice when it was found around 9:30 a.m. Emergency responders could not initially tell if anyone was inside. A dive team from Murrysville was called in to assist, and determined there was no one in the vehicle. The truck was pulled out of the pond by a tow truck as the divers waited to continue searching the pond until additional resources to combat the cold temperatures arrived.
The body was found underwater on the far side of the pond. It appeared the man escaped the vehicle, but became disoriented due to hypothermia in the frigid water, officials said.
He had no apparent signs of trauma. The body was collected by the Fayette County coronerÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ office for autopsy.
Officials were poised to search the woods surrounding the pond before the body was discovered.
Officials believe the truck was in the pond overnight, and noted both windows were open, and the vehicle was in park with the keys out of the ignition.
State police are continuing to investigate.
