A man who was reportedly attempting to steal from an unlocked van fired shots at the owner when he was spotted around midnight Thursday in South Union Township, according to state police.

State and Uniontown city police have been investigating a rash of thefts from unlocked vehicles in the area, which had been increasing. Police believe the person who fired shots was committing many of those thefts, along with another man spotted by the homeowner.

Police are working to identify the suspect. No injuries were reported.

The owner at 22 Coal Lick Run stepped outside and spotted the man in his van. He confronted the thief and chased him, according to Trooper Robert Broadwater.

“The homeowner is chasing him, and he turns around and fires four shots at him,” Broadwater said.

One of the shots went through the window of the home, narrowly avoiding the manĢƵ wife, he said.

The shooter was described as a black man in his late teens or early 20s, about 5-feet 11-inches to 6-feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He was wearing a bandana covering the lower part of his face, police said.

Shell casings and other evidence was photographed by a state police forensics unit on the scene early Thursday. Several other state police vehicles were also on the scene. Neighbors peeked out of their windows and watched the activity from porches in the typically quiet neighborhood.

Police encouraged people to be wary of the rash in thefts from vehicles.

“Lock your doors, and don’t keep anything valuable in your cars,” Broadwater said.
