Police investigating shot fired during Uniontown firework show

Someone fired a gunshot during a firework display outside Uniontown Mall at about 10 p.m. Sunday, according to state police.

Police said a male left the scene after firing a single shot. No injuries were reported.

State police are continuing their investigation and working to identify a suspect.

The event, Fireworks Over Fayette, is Uniontown’s largest fireworks display and hosts children’s activities throughout the evening. It is hosted by the Fayette Chamber of Commerce outside Sears. The event included live music and food and honored local students who are joining the military.

Chamber Executive Director Muriel Nuttall said the shooting occurred during the finale of the fireworks.

“It is unfortunate that in our rather close, tight knit community, we were reminded that we are not immune to the issues that have caused concern in areas across the country,” Nuttall said. “To have this happen at an event where so many children were enjoying a fun evening is disheartening. We were fortunate though, to have the incredibly quick response of law enforcement on the scene to handle the situation.”

Nuttall said there were more than 25,000 who attended the event, which is in its 28th year.

“The safety of our attendees and volunteers is always the priority. The Fayette Chamber works in partnership with the Uniontown Mall and coordinates these types of activities with local police and fire departments. There was ample security on the premises for the event. It is impossible though, to be everywhere at all times, and so we would always encourage our attendees to report any issues or behavior by others that seems dangerous or uncomfortable,” she said.

“Fireworks Over Fayette has always been an event focused on bringing families together to enjoy the celebration of our Country’s independence. This event is fully funded by the membership of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce, has been a long held tradition in Uniontown, and will be held for many years to come,” according to Nuttall.
