State police issue warrant for Uniontown man in infant’s death
Police are searching for a Uniontown man who is wanted for criminal homicide in the death of an infant whose body was found hidden in blankets in an East Huntingdon Township apartment.
Derrick Anthony “Hector” Bass, 29, of 89 Connellsville Street is accused of killing 11-month-old Niomi Rose Miller, who is the daughter of his girlfriend, Sara Miller.
An autopsy preliminarily indicated the baby may have been drowned, according to court documents.
Trooper Stephen Limani said Bass does not have a vehicle or a stable address. Police believe he is in Uniontown, elsewhere in Fayette County or in southern Westmoreland County. He stopped by his Uniontown address sometime after the baby died and left, he said.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed in the case, Bass was babysitting Niomi and his two young children at a MillerĢƵ Laurel Hill housing complex apartment on Gurley Drive while Miller was at work Saturday. Miller told police Bass called her at work and said he would pick her up at the end of her shift at 10 p.m. He never arrived, and she had a friend take her home. When she got back to her apartment at about 11:15 p.m., she called 911 saying her baby was missing and a TV and DVDs were stolen. She called 911 again about 45 minutes later, saying Bass told her he was arrested by state police in Washington County, and she wanted to go to the scene to get her baby. State police told her there was no record of a traffic stop. At 12:30 a.m., she called 911 saying she found her baby in a pack ‘n play wrapped in blankets, unresponsive and cold to the touch. State police responded to the scene and a coroner pronounced the baby dead.
State police responded to 89 Connellsville Street and found the stolen items, but Bass was not there. Christopher Bass told police Derrick Bass removed the items from the Laurel Hill apartment, according to court documents.
Miller told state police she and Bass had only been in a relationship for four days.
Limani said Bass’ two children were found safe, police said.
Bass was charged Sunday with criminal homicide, theft, receiving stolen property, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.
“If you choose to harbor this person, realize that you can be charged with a crime,” Trooper Steve Limani said during a press conference.
“And don’t think for one second that with something this serious that we wouldn’t follow through with that,” he added.
He said a person who helped Bass may not have known what Bass allegedly did, and asked anyone with information to call police.
“You’re talking about the purest form of life in an infant. The purest form of honesty and integrity and innocence – an infant, and he decided to take that life,” Limani said.
State police described Bass as 5-feet 9-inches tall, weighing 300 pounds with a “stocky” build. He may have dreadlocks with a reddish tinge.
Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or Greensburg state police at 724-832-3288.
“Please help us find him,” Limani said.
