A 23-year-old Hibbs man died when he was hit by an SUV on Route 51 (Pittsburgh Road) after his car broke down.

State police identified the man as Douglas A. Vandivner. He died at Uniontown Hospital shortly after the crash.

Vandivner and his passenger got out of his Cadillac DeVille near 1110 Franklin Drive at about 6:15 a.m. Thursday. State police said his car was partially in the road near Route 51. Vandivner and his passenger, who was not identified, were walking home when driver Colby J. Umbel, 23, of West Leisenring hit Vandivner, according to state police. Umbel was driving north on Route 51.

Umbel’s Mercury Mountaineer hit a guard rail, police said.

Umbel suffered injuries that appeared to be minor, including injuries to his neck, back and torso. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt. He was taken to Uniontown Hospital by Fayette EMS.
