Christina Troll, representing VFW Pennsylvania, won first place in the national Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy competition, held at the recent VFW National Conference in Washington D.C.
She received the $30,000 T.C. Selman Memorial Scholarship award and delivered her winning essay.
Troll, a senior, was sponsored by VFW Post 554 and its Auxiliary in Somerset. She represented the 23rd District, which comprises Fayette and Somerset Counties.
The Voice of Democracy Program is an oral essay competition for students in grades nine through 12. This yearĢƵ theme was “Why My Vote Matters,” chosen by B.J. Lawrence, national commander.
“Raising todayĢƵ youth to be patriotic, civically minded Americans is vital to ensuring a prosperous future for our nation,” said Lawrence. “The VFWĢƵ Voice of Democracy and PatriotĢƵ Pen competitions help mold todayĢƵ students into the strong and great leaders we’ll need tomorrow.”
