Uniontown Rosary Walk marks 30 years
Area Catholics will take their faith to the streets at the 30th annual Uniontown Rosary Walk, beginning at 2 p.m. Sept. 15.
This beloved tradition, hosted by the Altar-Rosary Society of St. George Maronite Catholic Church, includes UniontownĢƵ six Catholic churches and participants from throughout Fayette County.
Susan Thomas, who coordinates the walk with Pat Rogers, said itĢƵ amazing to see the walk reach this milestone.
“They all enjoy going to see everyoneĢƵ churches, but itĢƵ the devotion to the rosary that motivates them,” said Thomas. “And they like the fellowship of being together. We have great cooperation with all the churches.”
Knights of Columbus will lead the procession. Participants can either walk or drive. City officials are notified of the date and walking route.
The walk begins in the Garden of Prayer at St. George on Lebanon Avenue, then proceeds inside St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, East Main Street.
The group travels to four Roman Catholic churches: St. John the Evangelist where prayers prayers are said at Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto on Pennsylvania Avenue, then inside St. Therese on Mill Street and inside St. Mary Nativity on North Mount Vernon Avenue.
The group proceeds by private car to St. Joseph on Walnut Hill Road where the event concludes with a litany to the Blessed Mother at the outdoor shrine. Benediction follows in the sanctuary.
The rosary walk began in 1990 when the Rev. Gregory Mansour, then pastor of St. George and now bishop of the Eparchy of St. Maron, challenged the altar-rosary society to devise a special program to honor Mary. The Rev. Jack Morrison, then a young seminarian, suggested the rosary walk. Early organizers included Bernardine Yespak and Dorothy Sanner. Donna George is current president of the altar-rosary society.
