A fire rendered a North Union Township home a total loss Sunday afternoon.

Two occupants evacuated the home before fire personnel arrived on scene to douse the fire at 652 Coolspring Street according to North Union Township Volunteer Fire Assistant Chief Charles Franks, which Fayette County 911 said was reported at 2:46 p.m.

The fire started in the rear of the home and took 20-30 minutes to extinguish, according to Franks.

“We got a quick knockdown on it,” Franks said.

There was a rekindling in the rear of the home later in the afternoon that fire personnel put down as well.

The cause of the fire is officially unknown, and Franks said a state police fire marshal would investigate. Emergency personnel said an oil tank was in the rear of the home.

North Union Township, West Leisenring and Hopwood fire departments and Fayette EMS responded to the call, with Dunbar Volunteer Fire Department on standby.

The American Red Cross responded to aid the occupants, and West Penn Power responded as emergency personnel sought to address an arcing pole near the home.
