State police said a Ford Ranger driven by William J. Vernon, 26, of East Millsboro veered off the road and hit the concrete steps and wall outside of a home on Stone Church Road in Redstone Township. Vernon was killed in the Thursday morning crash.

An East Millsboro man died Thursday morning after the Ford Ranger he was driving hit a concrete wall and stairs leading to a Redstone Township home.

State police identified the driver as William J. Vernon, 26.

Police said Vernon had just left the scene of a previous single-vehicle crash and was traveling east on Academy Road.

He drove across Route 166 and onto Stone Church Road, where officials said he lost control of his truck and hit a wall on the left side of the road. That prompted the truck to veer off the road and hit the wall and stairs leading to a home just before 4 a.m., police said.

Trooper Kalee Wietrzykowski said the truck first hit a telephone pole on the roadway prior to hitting the stairs at the corner of the home.

Vernon was pronounced dead at the scene, and Wietrzykowski said he was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

She added that investigators are currently awaiting a toxicology report from the Fayette County coronerÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ office, which deferred all inquires to the police.

According to Fayette County EMA, Fayette EMS and fire departments from Republic, Tower Hill, Adah and Footedale responded to the scene along with state police and the coronerÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ office.

The scene was cleared at 7:28 a.m.
