Gaza receives largest aid shipment so far as deaths top 8,000 and Israel widens military offensive
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Nearly three dozen trucks entered Gaza in the largest aid convoy since the war between Israel and Hamas began, but humanitarian workers say the assistance still falls desperately short of needs after thousands of people broke into warehouses seeking food. Meanwhile, the Gaza Health Ministry says the death toll among Palestinians passed 8,000 as Israeli tanks and infantry pursue what Israel calls a “second stage” in the war ignited by Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 incursion. The toll is without precedent in decades of Israeli-Palestinian violence. Over 1,400 people have died on the Israeli side, mainly civilians killed during the initial attack.
Mission impossible? Biden says Mideast leaders must consider a two-state solution after the war ends
WASHINGTON (AP) — As the Israel-Hamas war enters a new phase, President Joe Biden is pressing Israeli and Arab leaders to think hard about their eventual postwar reality. Biden says central to that future should be achieving the long-sought two-state solution, where Israel co-exists with an independent Palestinian state. The push for a two-state solution has been put on the back burner since the last American-led effort at peace talks collapsed in 2014. Biden himself said last year that the “ground is not ripe” for such talks. But Biden is now warning that the Middle East can’t go back to the prewar status quo.

More than 1,000 pay tribute to Maine’s mass shooting victims on day of prayer, reflection on tragedy
LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — More than 1,000 people gathered for an evening vigil to remember those killed and wounded in Maine’s worst mass shooting. The names of the 18 killed were read aloud at Sunday’s event. Authorities say 40-year-old Robert Card opened fire Wednesday at a bowling alley and then a bar, leaving 18 dead and 13 injured. He was found dead Friday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Rev Todd Little from the First United Pentecostal Church of Lewiston spoke at Sunday’s vigil of how that diverse community is now sharing “brokenness, worry, fear and loss” because of the shooting. But he vowed the community is bigger than the tragedy and will emerge stronger.
Hundreds storm airport in Russia in antisemitic riot over arrival of plane from Israel
MOSCOW (AP) — Hundreds of people stormed into the main airport in Russia’s Dagestan region and onto the landing field seeking passengers arriving from Tel Aviv, Israel, according to Russian news agencies and social media postings. Russian news reports say the crowd surrounded the airliner, which belonged to Russian carrier Red Wings. Video on social media show some in the crowd waving Palestinian flags and others trying to overturn a police car. Antisemitic slogans can be heard being shouted and some in the crowd examine the passports of arriving passengers, apparently in an attempt to identify those who were Israeli. Dagestan’s Ministry of Health says more than 20 people have been injured, with two in critical condition.
UAW escalates strike against lone holdout GM after landing tentative pacts with Stellantis and Ford
DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union has widened its strike against General Motors, the lone holdout among the three Detroit automakers, after reaching a tentative contract agreement with Jeep maker Stellantis. The escalated walkout began Saturday at a Spring Hill, Tennessee plant – GM’s largest in North America, just hours after the Stellantic deal was reached. Â The added pressure on GM is substantial as Spring Hill makes engines for other plants in addition to big-ticket vehicles including the electric Cadillac Lyriq, GMC Acadia and Cadillac crossover SUVs. The Stellantis deal mirrors one reached last week with Ford, and saves jobs at an Illinois factory that Stellantis had planned to close, the UAW said.
Hurricane Otis death toll rises to 48, missing now number 36 as search and recovery work continues
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Mexican authorities have raised the toll to 48 dead from Hurricane Otis, days after the fierce Category 5 storm struck the country’s southern Pacific coast and the tourist city of Acapulco. Mexico’s civil defense agency said Sunday that 43 of the dead were found in Acapulco and five in a nearby community. A local governor had earlier in the day raised the number of missing to 36 from 10 a day earlier. Otis roared ashore early Wednesday with devastating 165 mph winds after strengthening rapidly. Families on Sunday were burying the dead and still searching for essentials as soldiers and volunteers cleared debris-filled streets.
Federal judge reimposes limited gag order in Donald Trump’s 2020 election interference case
WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal judge overseeing Donald Trump’s 2020 election interference case in Washington has reimposed a narrow gag order barring him from making public comments targeting prosecutors, court staff and potential witnesses. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan had temporarily lifted the gag order as she considered the former president’s request to keep it on hold while he challenges the restrictions on his speech in higher courts. Chutkan agreed to reinstate the order after prosecutors cited Trump’s recent social media comments about his former chief of staff. Trump’s lawyers have said they will seek an emergency stay of the order from the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
How extreme weather in the US may have affected the pumpkins you picked this year for Halloween
Hudson, Colo. (AP) — Some pumpkin farmers in the West, particularly wholesalers in places like Colorado and New Mexico, are feeling the pinching effects of drought. Farmers have had to rely on dwindling water for irrigation while battling wacky weather to get their crops planted on time. Some have cut back on other crops they grow because pumpkins bring in the most money, while others have described lower yields of smaller gourds. Still, pumpkins in major-producing places like Illinois are doing okay. Issues in the West are a reminder that all crops suffer when water becomes more scarce — and that other challenges, like labor and inflation, are stymieing farmers across the board, resulting in higher prices at the grocery store or pumpkin patch.
Arrest made in Halloween weekend’s fatal shooting of 2 in Tampa; 18 more victims injured
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Police in Florida say they’ve arrested a suspect in the mass shooting on a Tampa street overnight. Two people were killed and 18 injured after a fight erupted between two groups. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw says a 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting early Sunday. He’s charged with second-degree murder. Officers responded to the shooting just before 3 a.m. in Tampa’s Ybor City area. Bercaw says it’s an area with several bars where a large number of late night revelers had gathered. Investigators say they believe there were at least two shooters, but Bercaw had no information about whether further arrests were expected.
