Firefighters from numerous departments responded to separate house fires on Friday and Saturday that caused “substantial damage” to both structures.
Waynesburg-Franklin fire Chief Jeff Marshall said they were called to a duplex apartment at 343 S. Morris St. in Waynesburg shortly before 9 a.m. Friday with heavy smoke coming from the residence.
All seven residents inside were able to get out safely, but the building was severely damaged, Marshall said. He added that the state police fire marshal determined the fire was an accident after a dog apparently knocked over a “secondary heating source” in one of the units.
The American Red Cross of Western Pennsylvania announced the organization is assisting the residents displaced by the fire. Fire departments from Jefferson, Rices Landing, Center Township and Carmichaels assisted Waynesburg-Franklin at the scene.
On Saturday, Marshall said their department was called to a house fire at 634 Dunn Station Road in Washington Township about 8 a.m. The house sustained “substantial damage” in the fire and a woman was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital after suffering burns, although the injuries are not thought to be life threatening, Marshall said.
Marshall said the lengthy driveway to the house made it more challenging to get water to the fire, but the crews were able to work quickly to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters from Jefferson, Amwell Township, Lone Pine, Morris Township in Greene County and Morris Township in Washington County assisted Waynesburg-Franklin at the scene.
The state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of that fire.
