St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church is collecting funds for the purchase of generators that will be provided for Ukrainians who are without heat, electricity and lights as a result of continued Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.

A Mon Valley church is collecting donations to buy and send generators to Ukrainians, as Ukraine’s war against Russia – now in its fifth year – puts a strain on the country’s energy infrastructure and leaves swaths of the country without power.

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Monessen is participating in “Power of Hope,” a campaign organized by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

In a press release, St. Nicholas Church said the 2025-26 winter has been the worst of war, with Ukraine’s power grid being destroyed by sustained Russian attacks that have left Ukrainians without gas, heat, electricity, lights, and potable water for weeks at a time.

A report issued by the United Nations said Russia’s repeated attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has created “extreme hardship for the civilian population,” and has caused “extensive disruptions to electricity, heating, and water across the country, affecting millions.”

An April 5-6 attack on an energy facility left 340,000 residents in northern Ukraine without electricity.

According to the church, the first shipment of generators purchased by Power of Hope was sent to Ukraine in mid-March. As funds are collected, additional generators will be provided to people in dire need.

Each generator costs approximately $1,500.

“This severe and inhumane situation still exists, affecting the lives of people, their homes, schools, churches, and business infrastructure,” the church said in the press release.

Any donations collected by St. Nicholas UOC will be put toward the Power of Hope project. Donations can be mailed to St. Nicholas Parish, 17 Reed Ave., Monessen, Pa., 15062. Checks should be made out to St. Nicholas UOC with “generator project” written on the memo line.
