Mary Lou Hellein McBride
Huntingdon Park,
Mt. Pleasant
Mary Lou Hellein McBride, 96, of Huntingdon Park, Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, January 9, 2026, at Mountain View Memory Care, Greensburg.
Mary Lou was born July 21, 1929, in Uniontown, a daughter of the late Walter Caldwell Hellein and Lillian Belle Fullerton Hellein. Mary Lou graduated from South Union High School, Class of 1947. She was a cheerleader and voted most athletic female in her class. She later served on their class reunion committee.
Mary Lou was the quintessential mid-century mum. Her home was always welcoming to the neighborhood kids and is still a place where long-time friends visit. She dressed elegantly and kept all of her children just as well dressed. She had a weekly ritual, Friday Cleaning Day. As the kids grew older, they all participated. She always whistled as she worked, usually “I Dream of Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair” or “Three Coins In The Fountain.” She expected a lot of herself and her family and loved them deeply.
Once the kids were older, Mary Lou started working at the local five and dime store until her retirement. She was then able to spend more of her time with her beloved grandchildren.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant where she often served as a greeter.
“Louie”, as she was affectionately called, is survived by her loving family: Cheryl Lumley and her husband, David of Mt. Pleasant; Jack McBride and his wife, Patsy Wise of Holly Springs, N.C.; Maureen McBride of Redmond, Ore.; Kelly Keno and her husband, Steve, of Fort Pierce, Fla.; her eight grandchildren: Jeffrey Lumley, Derek McBride, Amanda McBride, Devin Keno, Anika Keno Langgle, Kaitlyn Bufton and her husband, Brian White, Molly Bealton and her wife, Courtney and Riley Bufton and his wife, Gaelyn; and her eight great-grandchildren: Mia, Talon, Finneas, Waverly, Mia, Avery, Blake and Cameron. She is also survived by her brother, Don Hellein of Belpre, Ohio; her two sisters-in-law, Shirley Hellein and Marsha McBride, both of Uniontown; her niece, whom she helped to raise, Carol Gren Hough of Georgetown, Mass.; as well as many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
