Jeers and cheers

JEERS: You can see Baltimore Ravens fans calling for the ouster of Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin after he interfered with kick returner Jacoby Jones in the Thanksgiving night game. But what’s surprising is the number of Steelers fans calling for his firing. It’s not like Tomlin’s been a bum of coach, although he was 8-8 last year and is only 5-7 this year. But overall, his record is 68-40, including this year, and he’s won one Super Bowl and lost in another appearance there.

All in all, that’s a good record, something many cities would be excited about. And it’s certainly nothing to get fired for. In addition, he’s apologized profusely for his actions in that game and said he would pay his $100,000 fine willingly. So, what’s not to like? Well, Steelers fans are spoiled, with many of them thinking that any year without a Super Bowl victory is a lost season. One has to wonder, though, how many fans are unhappy with the color of Tomlin’s skin more than his coaching abilities.

CHEERS: Thanks to everyone who has donated to our Give-A-Christmas campaign. The total now stands at $6,635, which is tremendous. As anyone who has followed the campaign over the years knows, the money is donated to the Salvation Army, which distributes the funds to its various units throughout the area. That’s the best thing about the campaign. If you’re from Brownsville and want the money to stay in Brownsville, just make sure to mark it on your donation.

One other thing, though, is to make your donation as soon as possible. The goal this year is $40,000, so there’s plenty of ground that has to be made up before the Dec. 23 noon deadline for the campaign. Time has a way of slipping by as the holidays get closer, and Christmas will be here before you know it. So make your donation today. The donations can be mailed to Give-A-Christmas,. P.O. Box 1147, Uniontown, Pa., 15401 or dropped off the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ office, 8 Church St., Uniontown.

CHEERS: The statue of Gen. Nathaniel Greene is back where it belongs on top of the Greene County Courthouse. A previous statue of Greene was taken down for repairs last July after 15 years atop the courthouse. That statue was carved out of poplar wood by the late Miles Davin Jr.

The new statue is a fiberglass replica of the former statue. It stands about 10 feet tall and weighs 170 pounds. It was raised to the top of the courthouse recently by workers from Fiske and Sons of Erie, a building preservation and restoration company. This is the fourth statue dedicated to Greene, for whom Greene County is named.

JEERS: It was not so long ago that if people wanted to let their views be known about the issues of the day, they had to give their name in a letter to the editor. That’s still true for most newspapers, but many people bypass such formalities by penning anonymous posts to various websites and blogs. And with anonymity comes all sorts of crude, personal even vulgar attacks.

It used to be that political disagreements centered on the facts and information available. Debates were civil, with both sides trying to stick to the issues. Not so much anymore. Now, those with different ideas must be in on the fix or on the take. So much for open, honest discussions, which is unfortunate especially for local issues. Nothing like just agreeing to disagree. It might make for fun reading, but it certainly doesn’t do anything to give anyone a better understanding of the issues. It’s a shame that anyone wants to read what these cowards have to say.
