Why are liberals so outraged about clerk?
I certainly hope that Oren Spiegler has recovered from the “chilling” experience brought on by reading Pastor Arnold’s letter in the ĢƵ which defended Kim Davis. Ms. Davis is the Rowan County, Ky. clerk who decided to go to jail rather than issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
I too, wonder at the wisdom or correctness of the clerk’s actions. I would not issue such licenses either, but I would resign my office if I was in her position. But that is me and it was not my decision to make. Moreover, it is never wise to violate one’s conscience.
Regardless, I think that Spiegler’s vexation and indignation at Ms. Davis for her refusal and his disdain of Pastor Arnold for supporting her is a bit much. His claim is that the pastor is “endorsing anarchy, and a lawless society” as well as condoning Ms. Davis’ “hypocrisy” due her multiple marriages by the pastor voicing his opinion. This is unfair and reeks every bit of hypocrisy as much as what Spiegler sees in the actions of Kim Davis. Further, to compare the response of a rural county clerk with the misdeeds of the segregationist Alabama governor, George Wallace is callous and better suited to a conniving demagogue.
The news media, liberal pundits, and even many conservatives have all decided that Ms. Davis had no legal, moral, or constitutional ground for her action. So in their opinion, “close the debate!” But what I feel is non-debatable is that the national outrage is not about Kim Davis’ refusal to obey the law but is more about her Christian beliefs. Had she been on the opposite side of the issue and had she stood for “homosexual rights” by refusing to obey a law that she felt discriminated against them, she would be honored across the land. It is now a “given” that civil disobedience is proper and praiseworthy only when it is God’s law that is being violated or when a liberal does it.
Where was the indignation and protest when Attorney General Eric Holder instructed attorneys general nationwide that they were not obligated to defend the Defense of Marriage Act while it was still the law or the land? Neither were his subordinate attorneys required to defend state laws–namely, those state nans on “same-sex marriage” –if they found them discriminatory.
I would like to know where is the indignation of the liberals at the “sanctuary cities” which openly defy federal law regarding the deportation of “illegals?” Apparently it does not even matter that this refusal includes those illegals who are convicted felons? Why is it that these indignant liberals and their fellow travelers are not being “chilled” by these “protests” but only by the disobedience of an obscure county clerk in Kentucky?
Can anyone remember when in 2004 then San Francisco mayor, Gavin Newsom illegally issued marriage licenses to gays? The very same voices that unanimously praised Newsom for his courage and “moral right to disobey unjust laws” are now screaming for the head of Kim Davis. When Newsom was sworn in as mayor and sworn to uphold the law, both state and federal law recognized only heterosexual marriage. When Davis was sworn in as a county clerk, neither Kentucky nor federal law recognized same-sex marriage. Alas, Gavin Newsom became a national hero and a symbol of courage and justice while Davis is vilified as a bigoted, fanatical religious nut.
Mr. Spiegler, I am thinking your “chill” may be a consequence of “whose ox is being gored.”
