Time just flying by
Here we are, just a couple days away from celebrating the USAĢƵ birthday. The days are just floating by!
(Perhaps the days seem to be floating by because the weather has been so monotonous. The graphics people on TV barely have to change the forecast. And, “floating by” is appropriate because that daily forecast seems to be rain, rain and more rain with occasional bursts of sunshine.)
Schools released their students just a month ago, yet, at least to me, the Fourth of July signals the fall happenings aren’t that far away.
But, letĢƵ forget about that somber topic for the time being and concentrate on the present — food, family and fireworks. Depending on your situation, all three might blend into one explosive party!
The holiday signals a couple things for the local sporting scene: The annual Woodruff 5K isn’t far away and the Fayette American Legion baseball regular season is winding down to a close.
The 33rd running of the 5K that honors one of ConnellsvilleĢƵ favorite sons, John Woodruff, happens Wednesday, July 8, come rain (see earlier comment), or shine, or humidity (ah, Woodruff weather), or all three at the same time!
ThereĢƵ still time to get that application in without the late penalty. Applications are online at www.woodruffrace.com or, for those a little more savvy, register online at the same website. Cost is $20 if postmarked by Friday, then it jumps up to $25 from that point until the race begins at 7 p.m.
The evening also presents an opportunity to get those young ‘uns started early with a kids’ race beginning at 6 p.m. And, itĢƵ free! Yes, no hit to the pocket book and loads of fun watching those young folks (9-and-under) recreate John WoodruffĢƵ gold medal-winning 800-meter run.
Many of the countyĢƵ finest young student-athletes got their start taking the two laps (well, actually 1¾ laps, if the truth be told) around ConnellsvilleĢƵ track. My sisterĢƵ kids had their start in that race with all three running the 2001 edition (yikes).
Now, one is a college graduate in grad school, the middle one just graduated from Hempfield, and the youngest is entering her junior year. Talk about time floating by!

Not to speak for them, but I imagine the Legion managers and players are pretty fed up with the monotonous weather of late.
I hope the skies clear over the next week or so for their sakes, with the regular season scheduled to conclude on Monday and the double-elimination tournament to start soon after.
But, the smart money is on the regular season being extended a day or two and the tournament in a dash to be completed.
Whichever team captures the tournament, the county (well, counties with the inclusion of Waynesburg, Carmichaels and Belle Vernon fielding teams) will be well represented.
This yearĢƵ host for the Region 6 Tournament is Shaler after Connellsville hosted the tournament last year.

The Fourth of July holiday also means the countyĢƵ golfers are beginning to hone their skills for the annual Fayette County Open.
The four-day tournament begins Thursday, July 30 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 2. More information on how to register will be posted in the next week or two.

Looks like Jim RutherfordĢƵ management group is going down shootin’ with all the deals made Wednesday. Check out the story in the sports pages for all the new faces added to the roster.

The annual Hall of Fame football game is just about a month away. Pittsburgh is playing Minnesota on Sunday, Aug. 9.

How about the USA womenĢƵ soccer team! USA! USA!

The first day for fall sports practice is Monday, Aug. 17, and the annual Fayette Scholastic Open is four days days later at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Yep. Just where has the summer gone?
