Versatility an asset for Rodriguez
BRADENTON, Fla. — Sean Rodriguez was seemingly the perfect National League player trapped inside an American League uniform for the first seven years of his major league career.
Rodriguez played every position but pitcher and catcher during his time as a utility player with the Los Angeles Angels and Tampa Bay Rays. He also made at least 36 starts at five positions — second base (198), shortstop (99), third base (53), left field (45) and first base (36).
And that came in the AL, where in-game changes involving position players are limited because the designated hitter rule is in effect and pitchers do not bat.
Now Rodriguez is in the NL, where the pitchers do bat and there is no DH. That means there will be plenty of opportunities for Rodriguez to pinch hit and be used in a double switches.
So, while Rodriguez was disappointed to be traded from the Rays to the Pirates on Dec. 1 for pitching prospect Buddy Borden after spending five seasons with Tampa Bay, he was quickly encouraged after speaking with his new manager, Clint Hurdle.
“He said to be ready because he planned on using me in a lot,” Rodriguez said recently at the Pirates’ spring training camp. “I was glad to hear that. I take a lot of pride in doing whatever the team needs.”
Rodriguez’s career offensive statistics won’t open many eyes. The 29-year-old has hit just .225 with 45 home runs in 624 games with a .297 on-base percentage and a .372 slugging percentage.
However, Rodriguez has his plusses. In addition to his versatility, the right-handed hitter has a decent .746 against the left-handed pitchers.
“We feel he can be a valuable player for us and really increase our depth,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said.
One of the Pirates’ priorities this season is to find ways to get their regulars more rest. Thus, Rodriguez figures to get his fair share of at-bats.
“Everybody wants to be an everyday guy,” Rodriguez said. “As long as I keep playing, I am going to want it, but at the same time I want to fall in line. So, however they need me to help the team win, I will.
“I’m excited to be here. This is a great club. You’ve got everything you need here to win — pitching, defense, offense and speed. Everything that needs to be brought to the table is here.”
