Join us for one of our most fun and popular programs. We’ll meet at the amphitheater to discuss our plan of attack. Then we’ll head to the infamous frog pond where we will try and catch some of our elusive green buddies.

FLINT AND STEEL MAKING

Friday, June 10 at 7 – 8:30 p.m.

Before the invention of matches, flint and steel was the preferred method of starting fires. Come learn the basic elements of what is needed to build a flint and steel fire. Then try your hand at this primitive skill. Successful builders of a flint and steel fire will be rewarded with s’mores!

We’ll meet at the Ramcat Put-in parking lot in Confluence and then bike 9 miles to Ohiopyle. Along the way we will stop and explore some of the hidden secrets of the bike trail. Brunch and driver shuttle provided. Please bring your own bicycle. Brunch buffet at the Visitors Center in Ohiopyle. $10 fee and pre-registration is required by calling 724-329-0986 or email bawallace@pa.gov

SUGARLOAF TRAIL HIKE

Sunday, June 12 at 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Exact Location — Sugarloaf Road

We will begin our hike at the Baughman Rock Overlook and then descend the mountain into the town of Ohiopyle. This is a moderately difficult trail so please wear sturdy shoes. It is about 2.5 miles long. Driver’s shuttle will be provided.

KAYAKS ON CRANBERRY

If you would like to give kayaking a try, this is a good time to get your feet wet. We will meet at the Visitors Center and caravan to Cranberry Lake. We will talk about the technics and safety guidelines for this relaxing sport. Life jackets and kayaks will be provided. Cranberry Lake is about 30 minutes away. YOUGHIOGHENY RIVER SYMPOSIUM

Panels to discuss the Youghiogheny’s recovering fishery, the river’s positive impact on the region’s economy and quality of life, ongoing restoration work, and threats to the resource. Speakers include DCNR Secretary, Cyndy Adams Dunn; Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau CEO, Renee Seifert; and Fish and Boat Commission regional biologist, Rick Lorson. Tour Trout Unlimited’s “Cage-culture” trout nursery, operated in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that furnishes trout for public fishing throughout the Laurel Highlands region. Talk fishing and wet a line in the river.

HUNTING SEASONS

WOODCHUCKS (GROUNDHOGS): No closed season, except on Sundays and during the regular firearms deer seasons.

No limit.

PORCUPINES: Sept. 1-March 31, except during overlap with the regular firearms deer season. (3 daily, season limit of 10).

CROWS: July 3-April 10, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. No limit.

STARLINGS AND ENGLISH SPARROWS: No closed season, except during the antlered and antlerless deer season.

No limit.

SPRING GOBBLER (Bearded bird only): Special season for eligible junior hunters, with required license, and mentored youth – April 23, 2016. Only 1 spring gobbler may be taken during this hunt.

SPRING GOBBLER (Bearded bird only): April 30-May 31, 2016.

Daily limit 1, season limit 2. (Second spring gobbler may be only taken by persons who possess a valid special wild turkey license.)

From April 30-May 14, legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until noon; from May 16-31, legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.

2015-16 FURBEARER HUNTING SEASONS

COYOTES: No closed season. Unlimited. Outside of any big game season (deer, bear, elk and turkey), coyotes may be taken with a hunting license or a furtaker license, and without wearing orange. During any big game season, coyotes may be taken while lawfully hunting big game.

OPOSSUM, STRIPED SKUNKS and WEASELS: No closed season, except Sundays.
