Wrestling Rushmore on the way

Mt. RushmoreĢƵ of pro wrestling

For almost two months, I have been toying with different ideas for an interactive multi-column feature.

I have a few ideas up my sleeve, but I just could not pinpoint an idea that grabbed my attention to make me want to start on it immediately.

Maybe we can call it writerĢƵ block or maybe I was being too analytical in finding the perfect topic.

Well, I received a video via text message on May 17 from two of the younger readers of this column, and I credit them with what is looking to be at least a two-month feature in this column.

McKenna “Boots” DeUnger of Charleroi and Bella Carroto of Monessen, hosts of the bimonthly “iBoots and Bella Show” that they share on friends and relatives Facebook pages, sent me a ten-second video that triggered the Mt. Rushmore idea.

The pair are close friends and teammates in the Century United Club soccer family and both are huge wrestling fans.

“Powerhouse, who is your Mt. Rushmore of wrestling,” the soon-to-be-fifth graders asked in the video recorded and sent by BellaĢƵ dad, Chad.

And just like that, I had a new interactive idea presented and I was ready to run with it.

Or at least I thought I was.

When I got together with friends to watch Extreme Rules that Sunday, I shared with them the idea of doing a column on my Mt. Rushmore of pro wrestlers.

But quickly, multiple friends there started firing off names of wrestlers and friendly arguments ensued.

When I was asked who would be on my list, without any set criteria. I gave five names and had to figure out which one to take off of the list.

Thing is, that list did not include Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, The Rock or Triple H.

Among the names given within a minute from the different friends included the four I just mentioned, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Randy Savage, Steve Austin, Bruno Sammartino, Andre the Giant, The Fabulous Moolah, Sting, Harley Race, Dusty Rhodes and the Ultimate Warrior.

Wrestlers not named in that group included Bret Hart, Curt Hennig, Nick Bockwinkel, the Von Erichs, and Mick Foley.

That is 19 wrestlers, not including the Von Erichs.

So hopefully now you realize how hard this project truly is going to be.

We will start by going through an era each week and next week will be two eras: pre-1960s and the 1960s and 1970s.

Several fans have sent me wrestlers from these eras via email and Twitter so keep them coming to my email or twitter accounts.

CenaĢƵ return

As noted that he would do in this column several weeks ago, John Cena returned to the WWE last Monday on Raw.

It was obvious that someone would interrupt his return and I was pleasantly surprised that it was A.J. Styles.

Word had been going around that Rusev may have been the one to get involved, rehashing a feud between him and Cena that saw them face off at WrestleMania 31.

Styles entered the ring as a fan favorite but left as a villain with “The Club.”

Styles and Cena will face off at Money in the Bank later this month and it will be a fresh match for Cena and more so for WWE fans.

Mania bids extending out

As any wrestling fan knows, WrestleMania is a cultural phenomenon and the event draws fans each year from all 50 states and from countries all over the world.

The financial windfall that host cities see is staggering and cities are actively pursuing Mania harder than ever.

Mania 33 takes place in Orlando next year and word is that the event will head back to MetLife Stadium, the home of the NFLĢƵ Giants and Jets, in 2018.

However, South Florida officials submitted a bid to host Mania in either 2018, 2019, or 2020 and is waiting to hear back from WWE.

Want to see the NXT Performance Center?

Earlier this week, the WWE announced that fans can now go to the NXT Performance Center and see what it is like to train in NXT.

The experience will cost $1,499 and it will take place on Monday, July 25th.

That is the same day as Monday Night Raw in Pittsburgh, so for readers in the Pittsburgh area, you might have to make a choice.

Information on the limited-space experience is available at wwwNXTTickets.com.
