FISHING DERBY
The Uniontown Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America is hosting its free annual youth fishing derby at Izaak Walton Park on Route 381 in Farmington from 9 to 11 a.m. June 4.
The derby is open to all children ages 12 and under and prizes for the biggest fish will be awarded in age groups. Participants must bring their own tackle and bait. Lunch and refreshments are free to all who attend. The park is about a mile from Route 40 on the left.
BEECH TRAIL HIKE
Sunday, May 29 at 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Ohiopyle State Park, Kentuck Campground Amphitheater
We will wind our way down to the bike trail from the Kentuck Campground amphitheater through an old stand of beech trees. This three mile loop will take us through moderately rough terrain. Along the way we will discover some hidden treasures such as a waterfall and interesting rock formations. Sturdy footwear is recommended.

Panels to discuss the Youghiogheny’s recovering fishery, the river’s positive impact on the region’s economy and quality of life, ongoing restoration work, and threats to the resource. Speakers include DCNR Secretary, Cyndy Adams Dunn; Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau CEO, Renee Seifert; and Fish and Boat Commission regional biologist, Rick Lorson. Follow-up to the Youghiogheny River Synmposium. Hot dogs, soft drinks courtesy of Chestnut Ridge, Trout Unlimited. Tour Trout Unlimited’s “Cage-culture” trout nursery, operated in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that furnishes trout for public fishing throughout the Laurel Highlands region. Talk fishing and wet a line in the river.

HUNTING SEASONS
WOODCHUCKS (GROUNDHOGS): No closed season, except on Sundays and during the regular firearms deer seasons.
No limit.
PORCUPINES: Sept. 1-March 31, except during overlap with the regular firearms deer season. (3 daily, season limit of 10).
CROWS: July 3-April 10, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. No limit.
STARLINGS AND ENGLISH SPARROWS: No closed season, except during the antlered and antlerless deer season.
No limit.
SPRING GOBBLER (Bearded bird only): Special season for eligible junior hunters, with required license, and mentored youth – April 23, 2016. Only 1 spring gobbler may be taken during this hunt.
SPRING GOBBLER (Bearded bird only): April 30-May 31, 2016.
Daily limit 1, season limit 2. (Second spring gobbler may be only taken by persons who possess a valid special wild turkey license.)
From April 30-May 14, legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until noon; from May 16-31, legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.
2015-16 FURBEARER HUNTING SEASONS
COYOTES: No closed season. Unlimited. Outside of any big game season (deer, bear, elk and turkey), coyotes may be taken with a hunting license or a furtaker license, and without wearing orange. During any big game season, coyotes may be taken while lawfully hunting big game.
or with a furtaker license.
OPOSSUM, STRIPED SKUNKS and WEASELS: No closed season, except Sundays.
No limits.
