Utility man Sean Rodriguez had one of the most dramatic hits of the season Tuesday night when his three-run pinch-hit home run off Jeanmar Gomez in the top of the ninth inning turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 win over the Phillies.
The last Pirates player to hit a pinch-hit home run to turn a deficit into a lead in the ninth inning or later was Rob Mackowiak on Sept. 10, 2003.
Down 2-1 to the Reds in the top of the ninth at Cincinnati, Mackowiak batted for Jason Bay and connected for a two-run shot off Chris Reitsma. Julian Tavarez protected the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning for the save.
