Enjoy the waning days of summer

As a kid, I always grew melancholy when summer moved into late August. The fireflies had departed from the evening sky and the sounds of katydids gave pause to the thought that summer would be coming to an end. Darkness was coming earlier and soon the joys of unplanned summer fun: riding bikes, swimming in the river, Popsicles and having enough money for late evening Dairy Queen would be giving way to getting ready to go back to school. Sunrise and sunset on the first of August are 6:17 a.m. and 8:35 p.m. By monthĢƵ end, it is 6:46 a.m. and 7:54 p.m.

Even today, I still lament the passing of summer and feel that it goes too fast and there are things that I just did not get to do. Already our meadows and roadsides are full of late summer wild flowers. Crickets can be heard singing in the woods and meadows. Even a few trees are showing signs of summers passing and soon the hillsides and valleys will be preparing for the grand fall spectacular.

Looking back, June was our warm month with lots of sunny days and several afternoons with temperatures in the 90s. July was a wet month, but temperatures managed to come in just around normal; and after each rainy spell, we would be treated to three or four nice pleasant sunny days. So far, August is a bit on the cool side, but still plenty of sunny days and lots of nights with the windows open instead of having to run the air conditioners. The remaining days of August look to be filled with lots of sunshine and temperatures near the normal range.

The warm summer temperatures begin their steady decline in mid-August. In the area August 15 has an average temperature of 84 degrees and by monthĢƵ end it has slipped to 82. Mornings also begin to lose their warmth slipping from 63 degrees on August 9 to 59 on August 31. The peak of our summer heat occurs on July 24 with averages of 86 degrees for our high and 63 for the low. August records for the area are 102 on August 4 1930.

The coldest August morning was 34 degrees on August 29, 1982. In the mountains, the temperature on that same date was 32 degrees and frost was reported both in the lower and higher elevations. The highest mountain temperature for an August day was 91.

A few days ago, the” FarmerĢƵ Almanac” came out with their winter forecast, but I think itĢƵ too early to talk about winter and besides last winter they missed the big snow and the mildness of winter. LetĢƵ enjoy the remaining days of summer and autumn and when the leaves are falling, we can begin to think of winter. All in all, this is a great place to enjoy the beauty of the seasons and our weather this summer has been a bit civilized.
