Good old summer time

The anticipation is over … summer is here!

Yep, the sun reached its apex in the sky at 12:24 a.m. Wednesday, signaling the time for vacations and all-star seasons for youth baseball.

The first day of summer, unfortunately, also means the days will be getting shorter as the season works its way towards the autumnal equinox.

(My brother PatÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ birthday is June 20, so the anniversary of his birth is the summer version of a robin as a harbinger of the changing season.)

Seems a little strange, though, considering the high school softball and baseball seasons came to a close less than a week ago with the state championships, including titles won by the Mount Pleasant and West Greene softball teams.

And, my mother is still a bit befuddled how two winter sports, hockey and basketball, close out their seasons a couple weeks before the Fourth of July.

But, best hurry up and celebrate kiddies, because before you know it the Pittsburgh Steelers will be traveling to Cleveland for the NFL season opener on Sept. 10.

Sorry, to be such a Debbie Downer folks!

The Fourth of July holiday is less than two weeks away, so is the end of the Fayette American Legion Baseball League regular season.

League-leading Uniontown travels to Connellsville Friday for a 6 p.m. start, but the forecast holds a 100 percent chance of thunderstorms, so bring an umbrella should you decide to venture out.

The Legion double-elimination tournament begins with the play-in game on July 5. The tournament continues on July 7 and runs through July 12.

The regional tournament will be hosted by Uniontown at Hutchinson Park. Play begins on Saturday, July 15 and runs through, weather permitting, Wednesday, July 19.

If you like baseball, I’d highly suggest making your way out to Hopwood for the regional or the other neighborhood parks for the local Legion baseball tournament.

Hopefully the weather will clear out by early Saturday morning so those of us running or walking in the Omelet 5K won’t get soaked. Registration is open Saturday at Bill Power Stadium before the race should you wake up and have to itch to get in a 5K and enjoy a nice omelet breakfast afterwards.

The Fourth of July means the annual Woodruff 5K isn’t far off. This yearÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ race is Wednesday, July 12, and applications are available online at www.activenetwork.com, through Facebook on The John Woodruff Club page, or at Grimaldi Dental, Bud MurphyÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ, Highlands Hospital, or Carnegie Free Library.

Once mid-July hits, itÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ all downhill kids. School is just over a month away.

So, enjoy the longer days with family, local baseball and the occasional 5K. Before you know it, the Penguins will be back in camp looking for the three-peat.
