‘GLOW’ debuts on Netflix

Netflix debuted a new show titled “GLOW” — Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling — on Friday.

The show, which I have not had time to watch yet, goes back to its early days even before its pilot episode which was filmed in December, 1985, and the promotion began running shows in 1986.

GLOW ran in syndication in a number of major TV markets over four years before slowing down.

Most of the stars in the show had zero wrestling background experience, but the one that did was Kia Stevens.

Known as Awesome Kong early in her career and then as Kharma during her brief WWE run, Stevens is in the show.

Chavo Guerrero of WCW, WWE and ECW fame, put the actors through a wrestling boot camp to get ready.

GLOW continued to do a show here and there and has been owned and operated since 2001 by Ursula Hayden, and she is in on the Netflix project.

The first season on Netflix has 10 episodes and has drawn early rave reviews with IMDb giving it an 8.5/10, Metacritic an 81 percent, and Rotten Tomatoes gave it a massive 94 percent.

I am hoping to get through a few episodes in the next week, and if I do, I will give an early review and once I complete the series, I will share my feelings on it.

WWE legend doing comedy Thursday

The Honkytonk Man, the longest reigning Intercontinental champion in WWE history, will be at The Improv Thursday night for a comedy/retrospective show.

Having wrestled Honky and done many road trips with him to shows, I know what he has shared in the confines of rental cars and if he shares any of the stories that I have heard with my own ears, fans are in for a treat!

Tickets are $20 and still available.

Ranallo staying with WWE

Several months ago, it had been reported that Mauro Ranallo, the best pro wrestling announcer for my money, was leaving WWE because of personal reasons.

It was reported Friday that Ranallo has signed a contract extension and will now be the lead announcer for NXT.

Benjamin finally returning?

Last year around the time of the brand split, vignettes aired during Smackdown Live about the return of Shelton Benjamin. Ultimately, he had shoulder surgery and did not sign with the company.

Word is, he will be returning to the company shortly.

Raw in Pittsburgh

WWE returns to PPG Paints Arena on Monday, July 31. Plenty of seats remain and can be ordered at www.ticketmaster.com.

Sting coming to Washington

Pro wrestling legend Sting will make an appearance at the Big Time Wrestling show at Wild Things Park in Washington on Friday, Aug. 11.

On this date …

In 2007, word broke that WWE star Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their son Daniel were found dead at their resident in Georgia after a double murder/suicide.

Without question one of the darkest times in pro wrestling history, this situation was scrutinized, analyzed, and overanalyzed by every possible media outlet, and understandably so.

The day before, Benoit informed WWE that he would not make it to its PPV in Houston where he was to win the ECW championship.

Benoit murdered Nancy on June 22, his son on the 23rd, and took his own life on the 24th.

After sending confusing texts to friends over the 48-hour period, authorities went to their house only to find their bodies.

To this day, I have never been able to bring myself to watch any of BenoitĢƵ matches and even 10 years later, I look back at that situation as to where a piece of my being a lifelong wrestling fan died a little bit.

This weekĢƵ question: When will WWE bring back a major star? Timmy, Brownsville.

EveryoneĢƵ definition of “major star” is different, so I am not sure how to fully answer it to TimmyĢƵ perspective.

If it was meant to mean bring back a former star who is no longer with the company, who is left to bring back? Hulk Hogan will be back in the fold, but I doubt he will ever wrestle another match.

Someone like C.M. Punk?

I doubt it happens anytime soon as the company and Punk are in litigation against one another, plus WWE took a shot at him this past Monday on Raw.

Daniel Bryan has made it known he will wrestle again, and his WWE contract is up in approximately a year.

Sting is retired and while Goldberg could come back, it is not new anymore as he just wrestled a handful of matches.

Someone like Triple H could be considered, but he is so busy behind the scenes I doubt he will be used much outside of occasional important feuds like the upcoming one with Kurt Angle.

Speaking of, Angle is the one guy left that they can hype up as returning, but he doesn’t have many matches left in him.
